Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:
Captain of the Top William Jones (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on August 5, 1864, on board the USS Richmond. His citation reads:
As captain of a gun on board the U.S.S. Richmond during action against rebel forts and gunboats and with the ram Tennessee in Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. Despite damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board as enemy fire raked her decks, Jones fought his gun with skill and courage throughout the prolonged battle which resulted in the surrender of the rebel ram Tennessee and in the damaging and destruction of batteries at Fort Morgan.
First Sergeant William Jones (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on May 12, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Virginia. His citation reads:
Capture of flag of 65th Virginia Infantry (C.S.A.).
Farrier William H. Jones (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on May 7, 1877, at Little Muddy Creek, Montana and on August 20, 1877, at Camas Meadows, Idaho. His citation reads:
Gallantry in the attack against hostile Sioux Indians on May 7, 1877 at Muddy Creek, Mont., and in the engagement with Nez Perces Indians at Camas Meadows, Idaho, on 20 August 1877 in which he sustained a painful knee wound.
