Disclaimer

If you do not know me (I mean, really know me) then there is something you need to understand before you read this blog: I value the truth above everything else... except a good laugh. A good laugh will almost always beat the truth as far as I’m concerned. Everything you read on this blog will be true, somewhat true, or something I made up in an effort to get a laugh. Sometimes I will go on a rant that I don’t really mean (or only kind of mean). Sometimes I will mean what I write only to completely change my mind a year, month, or day later. Such is life. By reading this blog you agree not to get offended by anything I write (or, at the very least, you agree not to tell me or anyone else that you are offended). It is worth noting that my employer does not endorse my blog (or even read it, to tell you the truth). The Wife also does not endorse my blog (though she will read it from time to time). I am not paid to write this... it’s just my way of giving back to the community. I have, and will, touch on a wide range of subjects and will give my opinion on these subjects. Again, most of what I say is for laughs but every now and then I will say what I really think and feel (see my views on Westboro Baptist Cult). How will you know when I’m serious and when I’m trying to get a laugh? You’ll know. And if you don’t know, well... maybe this isn’t the best thing for you to be reading. So, sit back, read and enjoy. Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:

Boatswain’s Mate John Flannagan (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on October 26, 1878, on board the USS Supply. His citation reads:

Serving on board the U.S.S. Supply, Flannagan rescued from drowning David Walsh, seaman, of Le Havre, France, 26 October 1878.

Private James Flannigan (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on February 15, 1863, at Nolensville, Tennessee. His citation reads:

Was one of a detachment of 16 men who heroically defended a wagon train against the attack of 125 cavalry, repulsed the attack and saved the train.

Sergeant Charles Clinton Fleek (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on May 27, 1969, at Binh Duong Province, Republic of Vietnam. His citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Fleek distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader in Company C, during an ambush operation. Sgt. Fleek's unit was deployed in ambush locations when a large enemy force approached the position. Suddenly, the leading enemy element, sensing the ambush, halted and started to withdraw. Reacting instantly, Sgt. Fleek opened fire and directed the effective fire of his men upon the numerically superior enemy force. During the fierce battle that followed, an enemy soldier threw a grenade into the squad position. Realizing that his men had not seen the grenade, Sgt. Fleek, although in a position to seek cover, shouted a warning to his comrades and threw himself onto the grenade, absorbing its blast. His gallant action undoubtedly saved the lives or prevented the injury of at least 8 of his fellow soldiers. Sgt. Fleek's gallantry and willing self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Before I get to what I intend to talk about today, let me say sorry for an oversight on my part. I was so busy over the weekend getting next Tuesday’s post ready that I forgot to say a little something about the anniversary of Granny’s passing. I can remember going to see her on Mother’s Day four years ago (the day before she died). She was asleep (I’m not sure she ever woke up) the whole time we were there (at Aunt Yvonne’s). I remember holding Mary Ruth up so she could give Granny a kiss and tell her she loved her. It’s a nice memory, but what I really love is that the last time I saw Granny awake we talked and it felt like I was talking to the Granny I grew up with. I can’t really explain it, but I remember being happy and… well… that was nice.

Today, as I’m sure you know, marks the 5 year anniversary of De’Andre Adams’ death. I already said what I felt I needed to about Dre last Thursday. But I did want to note the 5 year anniversary of his passing on here. He had been playing pick-up basketball late into the night when he went to drop off his friend and Winthrop teammate Manny Robinson before going to see his girlfriend (I think… or maybe he dropped off Manny and then was heading back to his place, I don’t remember). It was real late at night… a storm had knocked a tree down into the road… Dre saw it too late, swerved to miss it, lost control and hit a tree. All of the old data from Winthropfans.com (the #1 place on the internet to talk about Winthrop)… but if we still had it I’m sure you would see just how big of a deal this was. People were on the message board all day and night posting updates or looking for updates. How was Dre doing now? How did things look? Was he going to be back in time for summer workouts? Next season? Would he ever play again? Would he live? Every little word in the paper was analyzed over and over. Prayers were prayed. Any update that wasn’t worse than the last was celebrated as a step in the right direction. Fans of other schools, who only days/weeks/months before had hated Winthrop and everything to do with Winthrop were on the board offering support. Then word got out on May 16, 2007… De’Andre Adams was dead. No more big smile… no more pre-game “hype” dances… no more watching a guy play the game the way you like to think you’d play it if you had the chance. Things haven’t been the same since. If you have a minute, I recommend this article from dailygamecock.com about Terrence Campbell (a football player for the Revolutionary War Heroes). It’s about how Campbell grew up with Dre, Kenny McKinley, Jonathan Brooks and Tracy White. Of those five childhood friends, Campbell is the only one alive today. But life goes on, of course. A scholarship fund was created in Dre’s memory… his number was retired (I believe this is the only time Winthrop has done such a thing… jersey’s have been retired, but not numbers). At home games, fans hold up their hand (in a way that’s hard to describe) during Winthrop foul shots as a tribute to Dre (about halfway through his sophomore season I think is when he started shooting free throws by first holding the ball in front of him and then going into his shooting motion). In some ways, five years is a long time. Since his death, I’ve lost both grandmothers and one dog (Lucy) and gained two children (Susie and Daniel), one godson (Lucas) and one dog (Scooby). Mary Ruth was just a little girl back then… now she’s just a summer away from 1st grade. So yeah, the world doesn’t stop for the death of one person… but that doesn’t mean we can’t stop every so often to remember those no longer with us.

As you know, Monte, Vaughn's been working on a couple of new pitches, the Eliminator and the Humilator, to complement his fastball, the Terminator".
Monte: "I heard that".
Harry Doyle: "Dynamite drop-in, Monte. That broadcast school has really paid off".

Harry Doyle: "You know I used to hate Parkman when he was with the A's. It's amazing how a new uniform can change your attitude about a guy".

Harry Doyle: "He's still a dick".

Harry Doyle: "My God! Good news fans, the Indians are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact they appear to be beating the crap out of each other. It looks like Willie Hayes is trying to hit Rick Vaughn, and why not, everyone else in the league does. Hayes swings and misses. I don't know Monte, it looks like Vaughn is carrying his left a little low. This could hurt him in the later rounds."
