Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:
James C. Watson (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on July 12, 1870, at Wichita River, Texas. His citation reads:
Gallantry in action.
Private Josh Watson (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on June 4, 1869, near Picacho Mountain, Arizona. His citation reads:
Killed an Indian warrior and captured his arms.
Private Wilson Douglas Watson (US Marine Corps) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on February 26-27, 1945, on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. His citation reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as automatic rifleman serving with the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 26 and 27 February 1945. With his squad abruptly halted by intense fire from enemy fortifications in the high rocky ridges and crags commanding the line of advance, Pvt. Watson boldly rushed 1 pillbox and fired into the embrasure with his weapon, keeping the enemy pinned down single-handedly until he was in a position to hurl in a grenade, and then running to the rear of the emplacement to destroy the retreating Japanese and enable his platoon to take its objective. Again pinned down at the foot of a small hill, he dauntlessly scaled the jagged incline under fierce mortar and machinegun barrages and, with his assistant BAR man, charged the crest of the hill, firing from his hip. Fighting furiously against Japanese troops attacking with grenades and knee mortars from the reverse slope, he stood fearlessly erect in his exposed position to cover the hostile entrenchments and held the hill under savage fire for 15 minutes, killing 60 Japanese before his ammunition was exhausted and his platoon was able to join him. His courageous initiative and valiant fighting spirit against devastating odds were directly responsible for the continued advance of his platoon, and his inspiring leadership throughout this bitterly fought action reflects the highest credit upon Pvt. Watson and the U.S. Naval Service.
What was known, years ago, as the I’m just sayin… Top 1,081 Songs of All Time countdown has grown into the I’m just sayin… Top 1,453 Songs of All Time countdown. There are a number of reasons the list grew… new songs have been written since the last countdown (and I didn’t want to drop any songs from the last list)… old songs that were somehow left off the last list have been added… and this list is open to all genres (though I’m sure some have still been left out). The main additions are genres like hip hop, religious and holiday music. The thing to remember is that this list more like a snapshot. This is the list now. If I did this countdown again next month, it would probably be different. Of course, that’s not to say this countdown should be discounted. It’s still the biggest and best thing going today.
Before we start the countdown, let’s take a minute to talk about music. Music is, perhaps, the best of the arts. Good music is hard to beat. It can make you do things, bring back memories and change your mood. I was talking about music the other day to my children. The kids bless their hearts, don’t fully understand good music. I blame myself, so I did something about it. It came up when I was driving them somewhere and they wanted to listen to a Justin Bieber song. I was told he is great and the song is great. I don’t remember what song they wanted, because I blacked out with rage for just a minute. When I regained my composer I realized I had to do something. I thought about pulling over and making them all get out and walk back home, but decided there’s probably a law against doing something like that (at least until Trump makes America great again). I decided to let them hear good music. I also let them know that it’s ok for them to like Justin Bieber… I don’t… but it’s ok. As long as they realize/understand what truly good music sounds like, it’s ok for them to like other types of music. We all have our musical guilty pleasures. For my buddy Danny (yes, that Danny) it’s Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls. My friend Cory loves Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. I once saw Jeremy slap a guy in the mouth for talking bad about We Built This City by Starship. Even I like MmmBop by Hanson… so I get it and I pass no judgement on the music other people like… as long as they understand what good music is. So, I played them Free Bird (the live version, of course) and made them sit in the car and listen to it until it was over. Their three little minds were blown…
Friends, we’ve got a lot of songs to get through and only one month to get through it… so let’s get going. This is simply going to be a list with no commentary from me (until, maybe, we get close to the end). Enjoy…
