Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:

Sergeant Major Herbert E. Farnsworth (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on June 11, 1864, at Trevilian Station, Virginia. His citation reads:

Voluntarily carried a message which stopped the firing of a Union battery into his regiment, in which service he crossed a ridge in plain view and swept by the fire of both armies.

Sergeant Major John M. Farquhar (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on December 31, 1862, at Stone River, Tennessee. His citation reads:

When a break occurred on the extreme right wing of the Army of the Cumberland, this soldier rallied fugitives from other commands, and deployed his own regiment, thereby checking the Confederate advance until a new line was established.

Quartermaster Edward Farrell (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on April 24, 1862, on board the USS Owasco. His citation reads:

Served on board the U.S.S. Owasco during the attack upon Forts Jackson and St. Philip, 24 April 1862. Stationed at the masthead during these operations, Farrell observed and reported the effect of the fire of our guns in such a manner as to make his intelligence, coolness and capacity conspicuous.

The I’m just sayin… Know Your South Carolina Athlete

Today we are going to take a look at former Clemson basketball great (you don’t hear that too often) Horace Grant. Originally from Augusta, Georgia, Grant played basketball at Clemson from 1983-87. As a junior, he averaged 16.4 points per game and 10.5 rebounds. His senior year was his best, however, as he won the ACC "Triple Crown," leading the conference in points, field goal percentage, and rebounding. This won him the ACC Player-of-the-Year Award, the first Clemson basketball player to do so. He led Clemson to its finest season yet, finishing with a 25-6 record.

Grant was the 10th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft to the Chicago Bulls where he immediately teamed with fellow draft-day acquisition Scottie Pippen to form the Bulls' forward tandem of the future, although he initially backed up incumbent Charles Oakley, one of the league's premier rebounders and post defenders (and my favorite player of all time). In 1989, Grant moved into the starting lineup when Oakley was traded to the New York Knicks for center Bill Cartwright (greatest move EVER for the Knicks). He immediately became the Bulls' main rebounder, and established himself as the Bulls' third scoring option after Michael Jordan and Pippen, forming one of the league's best trios. He helped the Bulls franchise to three NBA titles in a row and became the first Clemson player to win an NBA Championship. Grant now has a total of four rings, the most of any former Clemson player. He was an NBA All-Defensive team selection four years and also an NBA All-Star in 1993. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1999 and named to the ACC 50-Year Anniversary team in 2003.

Other than the Bulls, Grant also played for the Orlando Magic, Seattle Supersonics and the Los Angeles Lakers. He ended his career with 12,996 points, 9,443 rebounds and 2,575 assists.
