Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:
Sergeant Arhtur J. Forrest (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on November 1, 1918, near Remonville, France. His citation reads:
When the advance of his company was stopped by bursts of fire from a nest of 6 enemy machineguns, without being discovered, he worked his way single-handed to a point within 50 yards of the machinegun nest. Charging, single-handed, he drove out the enemy in disorder, thereby protecting the advance platoon from annihilating fire, and permitting the resumption of the advance of his company.
Sergeant Bruno Albert Forsterer (US Marine Corps) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on April 1, 1899, at Samoa, Philippine Islands. His citation reads:
For distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy at Samoa, Philippine Islands, 1 April 1899.
First Sergeant Thomas H. Forsyth (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on November 25, 1876, at Powder River, Wyoming. His citation reads:
Though dangerously wounded, he maintained his ground with a small party against a largely superior force after his commanding officer had been shot down during a sudden attack and rescued that officer and a comrade from the enemy.

Thankful Thursday
Today I am thankful for Memorial Day… specifically, I am thankful for holidays that honor fallen soldiers. They deserve it. The holiday came about when Yankees… err… the Federal Government decided to start honoring the fallen Union soldiers the way Southerners had been honoring the fallen Confederate soldiers. I am not one of these people who believes war is fun or should be taken lightly. Wars are ugly, painful things that should not be rushed into… but I don’t believe they should be avoided at all costs. Life would be great if people could just live and let live… But I’m going to tell you something you probably already know: This world is full of bad people. And that’s why I believe the US should always have a strong military. Of course, I doubt my feelings here come as a shock to anyone… what with the Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients section on this blog. But just as important as having a strong military, I think it is important to remember and honor those who have died serving this country.
Some quick research on Wikipedia on this holiday brought up this little nugget: On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
Think about that this Monday. I’m not saying to have to go to parades or visit the graves to fallen soldiers. I’m just saying at some point this Monday, take a minute to remember. Just stop for a minute to remember the people who died serving this country. Maybe it was in a “good” war… maybe it was in a war you didn’t agree with. I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to be most people getting shot at would rather be fishing… or at a ball game… or on a college campus. Which is why I don’t understand how people could treat Vietnam Vets the way I’ve read and heard that they did… or, more recently, how the Westboro Baptist Cult can do what they do. But I’ll save that for another day… Today, I’m glad we have men and women willing to fight and die for our country… sometimes I wish politicians would do a better job using them… but that doesn’t change the fact that I am glad we have them. And I am thankful we have a national holiday that honors, and helps us remember, them.
